Abstract: The Council of Trent ordered the archbishops to convene provincial councils in each ecclesiastical province every three years. However, this mandate was not effective in any Catholic province. Thus the uninterrupted series of provincial councils of Tarragona from the sixteenth century to 1757 is a remarkable fact that deserves attention. Their study establishes that these councils acted as a representative institution of the Catalan clergy. In them, the bishops and representatives of the chapters and monasteries discussed taxes, jurisdiction or religious reforms.
